Raquel Baker (2012) in the essay, The Visual Rhetoric of Public Space, questions if urban renewal of historical public spaces should be allowed.

Baker (2012) supports his claim by exemplifying some of the local voices, then showcasing the historical significance of that space and how destructive redevelopment and historical erasure is abandons the past, which he argues is how many people define the space in the first place.

The author’s purpose is to raise awareness to this specific problem on conflict between modernization and the past, in order to force the readers to think critically about the the meaning of certain space to certain group of people and the consequences if those meanings are altered.

The author writes in slightly assertive tone for his audience, the readers of the Little Village Magazine, and others interested in the topic of the effects of the change of public space.
